The VLAN Blueprint: Stop One Infected PC from Killing Your Whole Office
A practical guide to network segmentation. Learn how to build firebreaks into your infrastructure.
Prerequisites
- A managed switch that supports 802.1Q VLANs
- A written inventory of connected devices
A network without VLANs is like a house without walls. If a fire starts in the kitchen, the whole house burns down. In a “flat” network, if a printer gets hit with ransomware, your accounting server is the next target.
The Solution: Functional Segmentation
The goal is to create “Firebreaks.” By segmenting your network into functional zones, an attack in one zone is contained and cannot spread to the others.
The Professional Segmentation Blueprint:
I use a standard 4-zone approach for most business deployments:
- Management VLAN: For switches, firewalls, and APs. Restricted to Admin access only.
- Production VLAN: For employee laptops and servers. High priority, strict access.
- Guest VLAN: For visitors. Access to Internet ONLY. Zero access to internal resources.
- IoT/VoIP VLAN: For printers, cameras, and phones. These devices are notoriously insecure; they must be isolated.
The Blueprint:
[Internet] ↓ [Firewall] ↓ ( [VLAN 10: Admin] | [VLAN 20: Staff] | [VLAN 30: Guest] | [VLAN 40: IoT] )
How to Implement This Without Downtime
Moving to a VLAN structure requires careful planning. You can’t just “turn it on.” You need a phased rollout:
- Phase 1: Map all existing devices.
- Phase 2: Create the VLANs on the core switch.
- Phase 3: Move devices one zone at a time, starting with Guests.
